KRISTALLNACHT

Kristallnacht was the culmination of Germany's pre-war Anti-Semitism. On the night of November 9-10, 1938, Nazi storm troopers and their followers 'spontaneously' attacked Jewish shops and synagogues throughout Germany. During that terrible night, Germany's Jews witnessed the destruction of their shops and businesses, their synagogues and their most sacred religious treasures. Kristallnacht foreshadowed the far darker night that would soon overtake Europe's Jews.

This intolerance and hatred perpetrated by the Nazis later spread to other religious and ethnic groups, including Catholics, gays, Jehovah's Witnesses, and Gypsies. By the end of WWII, Nazi Germany was responsible for the murder of eleven million men, women and children.

The commemoration of Kristallnacht is an opportunity for people of many different backgrounds to come together to celebrate diversity while saying, "No More," to intolerance and hatred. We invite you to join us on November 9th for this year's commemoration.

Student Symposiums

OHRC sponsors an annual student symposium, typically in the late spring, often held at a school site or on the campus of a local university or college. With a chosen topic distributed beforehand, students, teachers, and OHRC speakers and staff come together for a full day of discussions, activities, and reflective time that leave all participants more fully committed to living lives of respect and tolerance for all other people.
